President George Markowsky

 

George Markowsky is President of Ayers Island, LLC. He came to the University of Maine in 1983 to assume the first permanent chair in the Department of Computer Science. In setting up this department, George was a key figure in building the curriculum and equipment base, graduate program and recruiting academic staff. He recently reassumed chairship of the department to lead development of a new Ph.D. degree program for Computer Science. In Fall 2001, George also became chair of the Mathematics and Statistics Department at the University of Maine.

Prior to joining the University of Maine, George worked for 10 years at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York. There he pursued key work in the foundations of computer science and performed research in various theoretical and practical subjects, including three-dimensional computer aided design, speech recognition, and devices for enabling people with disabilities.

Before coming to IBM, he was a post doctoral fellow in the Mathematics Department at Harvard University, where he obtained his Ph.D. and M.A. in Mathematics. He also holds a B.A. in Mathematics from Columbia University.

George is continuously engaged in writing research articles and books. He has over 60 published articles, and several books on various topics in Computer Science. He also holds on patent. Among his books on personal computers and applications are A Comprehensive Guide to the IBM Personal Computer (Prentice-Hall 1984); The Downeast PC Course (McGraw-Hill 1992), and The DOS/Windows Book (Kendall-Hunt 1994). Recently, he has been investigating the applications of chaos theory and mathematics to the manufacturing process,

President of MeSDA (Maine Software Developers Association) for six terms, George Markowsky has been a key figure in building its membership to over 100 companies. He is widely quoted for his belief that the State of Maine needs to develop the software industry so it can provide high-quality jobs in the future.

George also founded Trefoil Corporation in 1994 as a computer software and general consulting firm. Trefoil offers custom programming and a wide variety of technical services including networking, Internet services, help authoring, technical writing and software interface and web site design.
